Biography Day Six

  • Father against it completely
  • Storm in winter the brazier almost burnt down house; almost killed family w/poison gas
  • Made fun of the "shit-men" so they caught him and made him stand and stomp in a waste
  • basket. After he promised himself he would never again make fun of anyone
  • went to tribal lands to see witchdoctor with dad
  • met the doctor hates the tribal reserve
  • baby born 3rd sister named Merriam
  • Christmas not celebrated again
  • money was stretched even further
  • Alexandra was declared a black spot; they decided not to tear it all down so the family
  • moved to a location that wasn't going to torn down
  • moved to 13Th avenue which had very unsanitary conditions

Biography Day Seven

  • school's influence stopped Mark going hanging with a gang
  • began reading books his granny brought him
  • He began to hear about successful black people such as Martin Luther King
  • After hearing Muhammad Ali beat a whit man in boxing Mark wanted to become a boxer as well
  • he went to the rink and got beat
  • quit dream of becoming a boxer

Biogaphy Day Eight

  • Arthur Ashe influenced him to play tennis
  • tennis became his passion
  • he began to meet white people and learn that they weren't all bad people
  • broke myth's about white people
  • obtained a job at a tennis ranch
  • became good friend of Wilfred the tennis proprietor
  • Wilfred German who was stunned at what happened in the ghetto

Biography Day Nine

  • Mark was able to act as a spokesmen for black people
  • seen as a traitor to other black people
  • because of playing tennis with WHITE people Mark would receive death threats
  • nearly killed with an encounter with old friends
  • because of his associations with white people

Biography Day Ten

  • used white people to get out of South Africa
  • Some may see it as him leaving his family behind
  • But he did act as a spokesmen for Africans
  • he did more to help the blacks in South Africa by leaving then he ever could have by staying there
